Behind the piece

Member is our everyday expression of Toxic Society, built around the marks that stand for who we are and what we care about.

The Marionette sits at the chest as a reminder to question the forces pulling at your decisions. The Toxic Society wordmark carries the other half of the idea: a community built around awareness, independent thought, and living with intention. On the hoodie, Weary Wolf gets the whole back.

Simple by design. What it means is up to you.

Look closer

Hold the piece up while you read. Each detail is on what you're wearing.

  1. The Marionette

    01

On the chest of the tee: our initials hanging from a puppeteer's control bar. A reminder to ask who, or what, is pulling the strings on your decisions.

  2. The wordmark

    02

Across the back of the tee. Look at the X: it's the same wooden control bar the Marionette hangs from.

  3. Weary Wolf

    03

The same character who carries the world in Atlas and takes the hits in Go the Rounds. On the Member Hoodie he's just himself.

From idea to piece

How the Member marks came together, from the first logo options to the print on what you're holding.

  1. The Member tee and hoodie are casual pieces for wearing the brand and the logo: the Marionette, the wordmark, and Weary Wolf on their own.

  2. Nine logo options

The full Toxic Society logo started as nine options, all built on the custom font. The goal was something cartoony that also meant something, so the options play with spacing, letters trailing off, some letters filled in, and letters hanging from puppet strings.

  3. Picking the strongest

After reviewing the options with the team, one stood out: the letters hanging from puppet strings. It carries a deeper meaning, about things controlling what you do in society and the outside factors behind the decisions you think you're making. To keep the letters together and keep that meaning, the X in Toxic became the crossbar of a marionette, with two letters hanging from it. The X is coloured in as wood, which keeps it cartoony and makes the crossbar obvious.

  4. The TS mark uses the custom font again. The crossbar is turned at an angle, like a side view of it, instead of the front-on view of the X.

  5. Outlining Weary Wolf

For the hoodie, the goal was a clean outline of Weary Wolf that is easy to recognise from a distance. This is the first sketch of the angle he looks from.

  6. Inking

Inking starts here, shown in one of the colours offered. Inking usually comes after the sketching is done and everything is placed, but sometimes a better idea only shows up while inking. The bottom jaw went through a few options: bigger, a longer chin, tucked behind the inner hood. In the end it stayed a clean line.

  8. Garment

Every print is hand-pressed in-house onto the garment you're holding.
